Top Summer to Fall Skincare Tips: How to Transition Your Skincare Routine for Best Results

If you don’t already have your summer to fall skincare routine transition in place, it’s time to get prepared.

You always look forward to summertime… That is, until you don’t. Sure, vacations are marvelous and you can work on your tan. But eventually, you grow tired of the often dreadfully hot days accompanying it, right? As well as the caked-on layers of sweat your skin accumulates.

Fortunately for your skin (and sweat glands), fall is just around the corner! So get ready now to ensure your summer to fall skincare routine transition is a smooth one.

Summer to Fall Skincare Changes

You may be wondering why it’s even important to change up your skincare routine as the seasons change. Here’s why it’s necessary…

During summer, there’s more moisture in the air. You know, that close friend of summer’s that we know as “humidity”?

As the summer starts turning to fall, the humidity sort of goes into hibernation. This leaves the air cooler, which can quickly leave your skin feeling dry, irritated, or itchy (as it strips away your natural oils).

So how do you overcome this seasonal struggle? By following our summer to fall skincare tips!

7 Summer to Fall Skincare Tips

These drastic changes in temperature and humidity levels don’t have to shock your skin. Follow these tips to have the best results in your skincare routine transition.

1. Avoid Dry Air

As you know, the outdoor temperatures start to drop during the fall months. So what do you usually do to counteract these chilly outdoor temperatures? Turn on your indoor heater. While those indoor heaters are warming up your body, they’re simultaneously sucking the moisture out of the air, which dries out your skin.

Thankfully, there’s a way to still enjoy the warmth of your indoor heater and keep your skin from becoming too dry. Just keep a humidifier on hand to filter moisture back into the air and maintain your skin’s moisture.

2. Keep Your Shower Warm

With the decreasing outdoor temperatures, you’re probably tempted to take hot showers to keep yourself from getting too cold, right? Well, you’ll want to condition your body to become comfortable with a warm shower, rather than a hot one.

Hot showers will cause damage to your skin’s protective barrier, which is made up of proteins that are held together by lipids. When this protective barrier becomes damaged, it leads to dry, itchy, and cracking skin. It can even cause you to get eczema.

3. Use a Hydrating Cleanser

One of the best ways to prevent your skin from drying out is by using a facial cleanser that contains hydrating ingredients, like our Purify Daily Cleanser

You can use this cleanser both day and night to keep your skin hydrated and protected. It’s made from an army of ingredients, like organic aloe leaf juice, glycerin, and organic honey. These combined ingredients will work together to draw moisture from the air and into your skin, keeping the moisture locked in for days.

Think of this as a shield for your face. So every time you step outside, your skin will be protected from that chilly air. (Now that’s one skincare product you’ll surely want to keep in your arsenal!)

4. Moisturize Properly

It’s always a good idea to incorporate moisturizer into your skincare routine, but it’s important to do it properly. For example, you may want to switch from your summer moisturizer to one that is more suitable for your skin in the fall.

Typically, you’ll want to use lighter skincare products during the summer months to keep your pores from becoming clogged and causing acne. However, in the fall months, it’s best to use a thicker moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and safe from the colder air outside.

It’s equally as important to ensure you’re not using too much moisturizer, as that can leave your skin oily and clog your pores. If this tends to happen to you, you’ll probably want to consider using a lighter moisturizing skincare product like a spray or mist.

5. Don’t Over-Exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin is similar to using salt in a recipe. It’s wonderful as long as you don’t overdo it.

When you exfoliate, your skin will reap many benefits, like removing the dead skin cells that lie on the surface of your skin, causing it to look dull. It also smoothes out your skin, making it appear healthier and more evenly toned. For even better results, find a licensed professional (at a MedSpa, etc.) to do an illuminating peel on your skin. Then follow up by doing an exfoliating treatment (like microdermabrasion) one week later!

If you over-exfoliate, though, your skin will become irritated. Combine that with exposure to the harsh, cool air that comes with fall and your skin can become even more damaged.

To avoid this, it’s recommended to only exfoliate your skin 1-2 times per week in the fall months. Want to learn more about how often to exfoliate your skin? Check out our other article Are You Exfoliating Your Skin Too Much: Your Guide to Face Exfoliation!

6. Use a Hydrating Serum

One skincare product you may often forget about is a serum. In the fall months, adding a hydrating serum to your skincare routine is very beneficial.

Incorporating a serum into your skincare regimen will not only help keep your skin hydrated in the fall season, but it will also make your skin look revitalized and refreshed.

7. Don’t Forget Your SPF

When you think of summer, one of the first things that comes to mind is likely sunscreen. This typically isn’t the case when thinking about fall, though.

One of the best summer to fall skincare tips you should remember is to continue using SPF in your skincare routine.

Just like recommended in the summer months, opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks UVA rays. Remember to cover all areas of exposed skin, and not just your face, as any part of your skin can become sunburnt or damaged if not properly protected.

Last Words

And there you have it… 7 summer to fall skincare tips: avoid dry air, keep your shower warm (not hot), use a hydrating cleanser, moisturize properly, don’t over-exfoliate, use a hydrating serum, and don’t forget your SPF!

Go ahead and stock up on all the skincare products you’ll need to survive the cooler outdoor temperatures and indoor heaters.

Then, once you’re prepared, you can sit back and enjoy that crisp, fall weather that is quickly approaching (and maybe even a Pumpkin Spice Latte)!
