Don’t “fall” for these skincare myths…
With a plethora of information at your disposal via the internet, it can be easy to believe everything you read.
When it comes to your skincare, though, you need to be able to decipher facts from fiction. Here’s what you really need to know about your fall skincare.
Fall Skincare Myths Debunked
Oh, the many myths of the internet—how they can deceive you. If you’ve already fallen prey to these myths, fear not, because you’re about to know the truth! Here are 8 of the most common myths about fall skincare.
Myth #1: Sunscreen is Unnecessary in the Fall
Imagine a nice autumn day. The sky is overcast and the crisp air cools your face as it wafts by. This is a welcomed change, following the often brutally-hot days you’ve endured of late. Just remember that even though the clouds are present, that doesn’t mean the sun is not.
One of the most common misconceptions regarding skincare is that you don’t need to wear sunscreen when the sun isn’t the center of attention (like on that nice fall day).
What you really need to know is that UV rays WILL still penetrate through clouds. So don’t pack your sunscreen away with your summer swimwear. You should be using broad-spectrum sunscreen year-round to protect your skin from sunburn and the potential of developing skin cancer.
Myth #2: All Skin Types React Equally to Weather Changes
Many people believe that all skin types react the same way when the seasons and weather change. This is not the case, though.
When fall approaches and the weather becomes cooler, for example, someone with oily skin may notice their skin becomes drier. Or if you’re someone who already tends to have dry skin, you’ll see that your skin becomes even more dry than normal.
The best thing you can do for yourself is pay attention to YOUR skin. How does it respond in the summer? The fall? Take mental notes and be prepared to tackle these seasonal changes before they occur.

Myth #3: Exfoliating in the Fall is Pointless
Regardless of what you may have heard, exfoliating in the fall is not pointless (even if your skin is less oily that time of year).
Exfoliating is beneficial year-round as it can remove dead skin cells, which then causes your body to produce newer, healthier skin cells.
One thing that may change in the fall season, specifically, is that your skin may be more sensitive than normal. So you may need to choose a gentler exfoliating product than you’d use at other times of the year.
Or, as the outside air gets drier, your skin’s natural exfoliation process could potentially slow down. If this happens to you, just increase your exfoliation routine to once or twice per week and get your skin back on track!
Myth #4: Only Your Face Needs Moisturizer
When you think of moisturizer, do you only imagine applying it to your face? If so, you’re certainly not the only one.
This is one of the fall skincare myths that most people tend to believe. Here’s the truth: All of your skin needs moisture, not just your face. This is especially true when the air becomes drier in the fall.
(So if you don’t already have a great moisturizer, you should find one soon.)
Myth #5: Fall Allergies Won’t Affect Your Skin
Now here’s something you may not have even thought about–how the changing weather and associated fall allergies can affect your skin.
The myth here is that fall allergies and such changing weather will not impact your skin health.
During the fall season, the humidity lessens. Your body is still exposed to common allergens, though, such as dust and mold. And guess what? All of these factors can affect your skin.
Some common fall skincare issues you may experience are irritated/dry skin, eczema, or hives. (Thankfully for your skin, you can prepare for this ahead of the impending cooler weather!)
Myth #6: Dry Skin Calls for Hot Showers
You may feel like jumping in a hot shower after being exposed to the cooler outdoor temperatures. Some people even believe that hot showers will combat their dry skin in the fall.
Here’s what you really need to know: That hot shower will actually do the opposite and strip your skin of its natural oils. (Which means even more dryness.)
So what should you do instead? Get your body comfortable with taking only lukewarm showers. Then, as soon as you hop out of the shower, apply moisturizer to your skin. This will help your body hold onto its moisture.
Myth #7: A Fall Facial Will Cause Breakouts
When you picture the fall season, what comes to mind? Maybe a basic pumpkin spice latte? Do you picture yourself sitting on your sofa in front of a cozy fireplace? Or perhaps a nice fall facial?
Well, there’s a fall skincare myth that says facials will cause your skin to break out.
Thankfully for your skin, this is NOT true. When done properly and professionally, a great facial in the fall shouldn’t cause your skin to break out at all.
It is important to note, however, that if your skin is already heavy on blemishes, your pores will likely go through a purging session following a facial. (This is good, though, because you want all that stuff to evacuate your pores!) So go ahead and schedule that pampering session for yourself!
Myth #8: DIY Fall Skincare Products Are Best
Are you a frequent DIYer? DIYing can be great in some instances. But is it great when involving skincare products?
There’s a fall skincare myth circulating the internet that making your own fall skincare products using natural ingredients is better than buying from a skincare company.
Sure, maybe there’s a good mask or sugar scrub you could whip up in the kitchen. But it’s certainly not going to be better than buying all-natural skincare products from professionals.
This myth has to be debunked. The truth is, your skin simply cannot absorb natural ingredients (like ones you’d find in your kitchen) in the same manner that your body can. For this reason, it’s always best to opt for the products from a skincare company.
